What is a healthy balanced diet?

A well-balanced diet has enough nutrients and calories to meet a child's needs. It lays the foundation of a lifetime of good health, and it helps your child stay healthy and full of energy.

Babies need only milk for the first 4 to 6 months, and breast milk is undoubtedly best. You can start introducing tastes of solids as early as 4 months if your baby seems ready. However, hungry babies of 4 to 5 months may simply want more milk, so don't rush in with solids too soon. If you want to increase your milk supply, breastfeed more often and, perhaps, for longer, and over the next 2 to 3 days you will begin making more milk. It is wise to wait no longer than 6 months before offering solids.

Milk is a baby's most important food for the first year. After that, the baby continues to make the transition from a pre-dominantly milk diet to what the rest of the family eats, though milk is still an important source of nourishment. This is partly because it contains quite a lot of fat, and under-fives need proportionately more fat than older children and adults do.
